IMPORTANT BOOKING RULES:

1. Parental notification forms MUST BE distributed at least 14 days prior to the presentation.

2. Speakers do NOT make presentations to combined classes.

3. Speakers only present with the actual classroom teacher present, not a substitute teacher.

4. Because of our limited number of speakers, we can not provide speakers for less than 3 classrom presentations per day and it does get very difficult to arrange for speakers if there are major time gaps in the speaking request such as, "can you talk to my period 1, 2, and 5 classes."

What Is Positively Speaking?

The Positively Speaking program is a collaboration between schools and health agencies to provide well-trained speakers appropriate for California classrooms. Since 1992 program staff have collaborated with 30 agenciesthroughout California to select, train, and schedule speakers so that students can hear an important life-saving message. Presentations made in health classes of the Los Angeles Unified School District are funded by grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What Is a Positively Speaking Presenter?

A Positively Speaking presenter is an individual infected with HIV or someone who has been personally affected bythe disease. Speakers have received specialized training, preparing them to share their personal story how HIV hasimpacted their lives. Bringing presenters into the classroom helps students understand public health issues and societal views as requiredby California Education Codes 51930-51939 regarding AIDS prevention instruction. Positively Speaking presenters are selected by local coordinating agencies. Presenters then receive 16 hours ofspecialized training conducted by local agency staff in conjunction with the project coordinators.

The presenter training includes:

  • Basic facts about HIV disease
  • School district policies and legal issues concerning HIV/AIDS instruction
  • Developmental issues facing adolescents
  • Appropriate techniques for answering sensitive questions
  • Presenting prevention messages that support behavioral change

What Are the Goals of the Positively Speaking Program?

  • Support school districts in implementing mandated HIV/AIDS education by training presenters appropriately forpublic school classrooms
  • Put a human face on the AIDS epidemic and make AIDS "real"
  • Promote abstinence and healthy decision making
  • Build mutual caring and compassion between young people and persons with HIV/AIDS
  • Promote collaboration between health agencies and schools Student/Teacher Comments About Positively Speaking Presentations

"It was like a light bulb being turned on. A wonderful experience for children to interact with someone they have only read about or heard about. It gave them a chance to hear firsthand how important it is to make good decisions andhow those decisions can affect one for life."
